Lab Team

Principal Investigator

Dr. Cheryl Currie

I am an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Lethbridge. A social epidemiologist by training, I created the Social Epidemiology in Action Lab to examine and address the ways in which social experiences can get under the skin to shape health, stress biology, and addictive behaviour.

Research Coordinator

Mahala Swisterski

BHSc, MSc (Student)

Mahala began working in the lab in February 2020. She has an Advanced Diploma in Rural Pre-Medicine from Selkirk College, a Bachelor of Health Sciences with a major in Indigenous Health from the University of Lethbridge, and is in her second year of the MSc Public Health program at the University of Lethbridge. Mahala grew up in small town Alberta and experienced first-hand how living in a rural community influenced her health. Mahala is currently working on her thesis under the supervision of Dr. Currie. For Mahala’s thesis, she is interested in how the social and communication development of children in low-income families has been impacted by the pandemic. Mahala hopes to continue exploring the unique impacts that living in rural and low-income environments has on health outcomes.

Research Assistants

Amanda Hepp

BSc, BEH, CPHI(C), MSc (Student)

Amanda began her MSc in Public Health in January 2022 under the supervision of Dr. Currie. She holds a BSc in Nutrition and Food Science from the University of Alberta, a Bachelor of Environmental Health from Concordia University of Edmonton. Amanda is a certified public health inspector and currently works in Southern Alberta. Amanda chose to pursue an MSc so that she can work at an upstream level to reduce health inequities that inherently exist in diverse rural and remote communities in Canada.

Ashmi Shahi

BHSc, MSc (Student)

Ashmi began an MSc in Public Health in January 2022 under the supervision of Dr. Currie. She has a BHSc in Public Health and aspires to become an epidemiologist. Merrin Monteith

BSc (Student)

Merrin started in the lab in September 2021. She has a Neuroscience degree and is currently applying to graduate school in public health. Her interest in the public health field was sparked by taking an epidemiology class with Dr. Currie. She is currently assisting with a community health research project to help determine effective treatments for recovery from drug addiction.
